12/01/2012 History of Lord Ayyappa

Washington in U.S.A. has the distinction of having the first ever Ayyappa shrine with the 18 sacred steps established outside India. There are separate shrines in the temple complex for the Divine Mother, Maalikappurath-amma, Kannimoola Ganapathi, divine serpents and other deities. Located at Lanham, Maryland in Washington, the temple was consecrated by the Sabarimala Thanthri, Sri Thaazhaman Kandararu Maheswararu in the presence of thousands of Ayyappa devotees. The temple is situated close to the Siva-Vishnu temple of Maryland. The foundation of the Ayyapa temple was a long cherished dream of Ayyappa devotees of U.S.A, and hundreds of devotees from various parts of the continent irrespective of nationalities came to witness the consecration.

Some temples in the U.S.A. like the Ganesha temple of New York, have special shrines to worship Lord Ayyappa. There are Ayyappa temples in countries like Malaysia and Ceylon. Ayyappa devotees are spread throughout the world and they engage in group worship setting up several temporary shrines and prayer halls during the auspicious Mandala period. Ayyappa temples will eventually be established in several parts of the globe spreading the universal spiritual message of Ayyappa worship. Of late, devotees other than Indians have also started visiting the Sabarimala shrine with Irumudikkettu on the head after observing the prescribed austerities.
