In Madhya Pradesh, the Ayyappa shrines are located at Bhilai, Bilaspur, Bhopal, Raipur, Bishrampur and Gwalior are well-known. In conducting Pooja-s, festivals, spiritual discourses and cultural programmes, Bhilai Ayyappa temple stands prominent. During the Mandala period, thousands of devotees visit this temple. On the day of the ritualistic procession, the ‘steel city’ for a while gets immersed in devotion to Ayyappa. Festival of this temple begins on the Makara-samkrama day and continues for ten days. All these days several art and cultural programmes are conducted. Eminent Thaayambaka experts and Naagaswara maestros and other artists who reach there from Kerala and other parts of the country contribute to make the festival an exhilarating experience. Adjacent to the temple there is a building with a large auditorium and accommodation facilities.


The temple is situated near Tiffra Railway crossing. Hundreds of devotees visit the temple daily. A special feature of this shrine is that as in Erumeli and Sabarimala, the auspicious eagle Krishna-Parunthu makes rounds above the temple during the Pooja-s performed on certain special occasions.


The Ayyappa temple was established in Murar area by the Ayyappa Seva Samajam of Gwalior. The consecration rituals were performed in August 1990 by Periyamadathil Sri Narayanan Potti. Apart from daily Pooja-s, special Pooja-s are conducted during the Mandala period.
